The wait is over! Apple has officially released the first public betas for its next generation of operating systems, meaning anyone who’s eager to try the latest features can finally get their hands on them.
The new public betas include:
- iOS 27
- iPadOS 27
- macOS 27 Golden Gate
- watchOS 27
- visionOS 27
- tvOS 27
Apple first showed off these updates during WWDC back in June, and since then they’ve been available exclusively to developers. After a few rounds of testing and bug fixes, Apple is now opening the doors to public beta testers.
Public Beta Build Numbers
If you’re keeping track, here are the latest builds:
- iOS 27 Public Beta 1 — 24A5380h
- iPadOS 27 Public Beta 1 — 24A5380l
- macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta 1 (Developer Beta 3 v2) — 26A5378n
- watchOS 27 Public Beta 1 — 23U5062b
- visionOS 27 Public Beta 1 — 24M5316k
- tvOS 27 Public Beta 1 — 24J5315i
Should You Install It?
The public beta is a much better choice than the developer beta if you’re just excited to check out Apple’s newest features. These builds have already gone through several weeks of testing, so many of the bigger bugs have been ironed out.
That doesn’t mean everything is perfect, though.
You’ll still run into the occasional bug, apps that aren’t fully compatible, battery drain, or other unexpected issues. That’s just part of running beta software.
A Few Words of Caution
If your iPhone, Mac, or iPad is the device you rely on every single day, you may want to hold off for a while longer.
Apple recommends installing beta software only on secondary devices whenever possible. Before updating, make sure you’ve created a full backup of your important data. It’ll save you a lot of headaches if something goes wrong.
Every year, people jump into the beta without a backup and end up regretting it. Don’t be that person.
Worth Trying?
If you love testing new features before everyone else, the public beta is easily the safest way to do it. You’ll get an early look at everything Apple has been working on while avoiding many of the rough edges that came with the first developer releases.
Just remember—it’s still beta software. Expect a few hiccups, keep your data backed up, and enjoy taking Apple’s latest operating systems for a spin before their official launch later this year.
