Apple announces date for annual fall reveal event

"Hey Siri, give us a hint."

Apple has officially revealed the date for this year's autumn press event to be September 9, but not without teasing its fans with a cryptic quotation. The announcement, posted on Apple's website, says little except for the date and a hint that its virtual assistant, Siri, could play a role in the conference. Even Siri is keeping the event's agenda a secret, albeit playfully.

When iOS users ask Siri to "give them a hint," they are met with a coy response from the assistant, who is expected to get a major intelligence upgrade with iOS 9. Her answers include, "You'll have to wait until September 9. I bet you were one of those kids who snuck downstairs to open presents early, weren't you?" and "The only hint I can give you right now is a hint of lime. And that there's a big announcement on September 9."

While Siri hasn't been much help in helping users figure out what Apple will reveal at its fall conference in San Francisco, it is a pretty safe bet that Apple will use its stage time to reveal the next-generation iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. In past years, Apple unveiled its newest handsets at the September conference before releasing them to consumers about a week and a half later.

You can also expect Apple to disclose the launch dates of its newest operating systems, iOS 9, OSX 10.11 and watchOS 2 on the ninth. Many Apple fans are hoping for a look at the next generation AppleTV, which is expected to be a major update from the existing set-top box. Others hope for more information regarding the upcoming iPad mini 4 or the possible release of an iPad Pro.

You can watch the event live on Apple's website starting at 10 am PDT on September 9.
