Apple is about to double the iPhone's storage capacity

"Not Enough Storage"

That pesky message has plagued iPhone users for as long as the device has existed. Sometimes, it stops you from capturing the perfect photo or recording the video you had prepared. Other times, it means you can't download the app you need to pay for your parking or edit a document. Besides battery life, storage capacity is one of the most limiting factors of the iPhone. Next year's model could throw this problem to the wind, however, with new a new report from TrendForce claiming the new iPhone will get a massive boost in storage.

"Apple is certain to raise the maximum storage option to 256GB" for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus slated for release later this year, according to the report. That would be double the maximum capacity offered on both the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

The change would be due in large part to the device's camera upgrade, reports TrendForce. Expected to sport a dual-camera system, the new phone's images would be higher quality – and larger – than any iPhone to date. Plus, with flash storage growing ever cheaper since late 2015, improved storage is becoming a hot commodity in the smartphone market.

For business users, this could put an end to the debilitating freezes in productivity that can result from running out of storage on the job. For example, if representatives in the field ran out of storage during their first site visit in a packed day, they might be left unable to operate until they could delete files and clear up room on their device. If the company required them to back the files up manually before deleting them, it could take even more time, as that process has to be done from a computer. Having an iPhone with double the storage space would make instances like these far less likely.

Companies with limited on-device storage could also look for an alternative location to harbor their field data. A custom Filemaker system could give enterprises the mobile platform they need to access files and data from the field, without having to store bulky files on individual devices. That way, no matter how much storage any single user had available, he or she could work worry-free all day.
